Beautiful Kantine Band
"We're may be fun, but we're not funny." (Lux Interior, The Cramps)

"One of the more original surf-based bands out there. Austria's Beautiful Kantine Band play fun songs with exuberance and exhilarating shouts. Aside from the treasure trove of intros are some mighty cool vocals, including some riding on surf platforms." (Phil Dirt, Reverb Central)

With their bass-free cellar bar sound, comprising three committed and dedicated rockabillyfied half-accustic guitarists plus an excellent “Shake, Rattle & Roll” minimal percussion, the Beautiful Kantine Band is not only reminiscent of the bathroom-tile natural echo sound once produced by various dedicated German or Italian provincial twist or beat hit-combos from the fifties and sixties. They also recall US acts like Alex Chilton, Tav Falco & Panther Burns, The Gibson Brothers and, of course, the Cramps. The similarity in sound also results from the contact with former popular musicians of the past.

What rockabilly was for the aforementioned US acts, is for the Beautiful Kantine Band the German hit. An equally enjoyable and seriously-taken musical genre that besides loads of petit bourgeoisie also supplies unruly pop qualities. Since the Beautiful Kantine Band is well known as lovers of such incredibly strange hit music, this fact won’t remain hidden to them. Included are not only the unique Austrian sixties pop heroes, the Bambis, as a musical impetus. Their cover of the exotica-hit “Taboo” (in their version: “Inka City”) was already back then imported Bizarro-Surf to Austria.
A situation that really only now ( a good 40 years later) is being appreciated through the music of the Beautiful Kantine Band. They have turned out to be particularly special with their instrumentals, as with all ‘surf creatures’ who have been washed with all waters. From cosmonautic GDR-Sputnik-Surfadelica ("Astronaut auf Kurs", "Von hier nach dort") to African and South American mixed technicolour-extreme-exotica ("Massimba Cortez"), here in the spirit of surfing rockabilly and garage punk pioneers like Dick Dale & The Delltones, Link Wray or The Trashmen, we find the ideal soundtrack to get any party going.

The music fits well together with a consistently wonderful clipped English accent ( just listen to “Bleib wie du bist”), along with The Bambis and also traces of Ricky Shayne and Drafi Deutscher’s “Shake Hands” shot throughout. It constantly tends towards Elvis In The Rhineland “Wooden Heart- Muss I denn” beat-club atmosphere. It also crosses over the lively ska , two-tone, polka and twist into obscurity. In addition, Elvis’ G.I. Joe in Germany film entitled “Café Europe” is reflected in the name of the Beautiful Kantine Band’s 2002 well-known debut “Tanzcafe der Nationen”.

The abovementioned outline of this bastardised form of German hit music has also looked for inspiration from the spirit of Buddy Holly and the Velvet Underground (the Beautiful Kantine Band acknowledges Lou Reed’s Doo Wop/Surf beginnings), achieving it with qualities regarding their hit potential people like you are looking for. Any doubters are recommended to listen to numbers like ‘Schüchtern’, ‘Mein Gott’ or ‘Rosen und Narcissen’.
